Monument castle on the hill above the city. There are galleries, spots to enjoy the view or admire the architecture, visit history expositions, try some medieval activities with locals or buy some arts.
Don't miss the World Heritage-listed Royal Palace and Castle Hill. Home to the Hungarian National Gallery, the Budapest History Museum, famous Fishermen's Bastion, tiled roof of the Matthias Church.
Some people have added photos here of the Matthias church ... It's a separate building about a ten minute walk away. It's not the castle. The castle is the building with the blue dome.

You can walk up but there is also a cable car to the right hand side as you look at the building opposite the bridge. Lovely views and they had a palinka and whiskey festival at the top. Extra cost.

Wolt-on keresztül hozattunk ,csak káposztás rétest. Sajnos a káposzta töltelékben túl sok volt a zsemlemorzsa,hiányzott nekünk a bors és kissé sótlan volt. Remélem a többi rétesfajta jobb.

Finomak a rétesek, kedves a kiszolgálás. A választék is elég nagy. Az ára se vészes.

We stopped here for a little sweet strudel. We tried the apple walnut, plum walnut and the sweet cheese. All delicious and a nice afternoon snack!

As you walk to the Fisherman's Bastion, you may be lucky enough to walk through an archway that opens onto the square of Matthias Church and the Fisherman's Bastion. As you walk through that archway, be sure not to miss Budavari Retesvar, a cute little bakery that features strudels and "pizza" (langos-like bread with cheese and onions +/- meat). We were on a walking tour, and our guide recommended this place for some of the best strudel in the area.
It is a small, walk up place that has maybe two barstool seats inside the cafe. There's a case featuring delectable sweet and savory items. We got a plum-walnut (a seasonal special) and an apple strudel as well as a "bread langos" (i.e., pizza). We ate everything while seated on one of three benches outside of the restaurant. I have never had traditional strudel before (it's usually one of the packaged things or they're smaller, sweeter). These strudels are very fresh (the dough feels/tastes homemade) and the fillings are flavorful and not too sweet/sour. You have the option of dusting the strudels with powdered sugar. The "bread langos" complemented the sweet snacks but it was greasy and difficult to eat with our hands or even with the one fork we got to help share/split the snacks.

We found this tiny place late in the day. Of course the strudels were a little soft and not as fresh as in the morning, but they were still enjoyable. One sour cherry + one apple strudel = two happy people.

Good and cheap at nice place, benches in front and wind flowing through the passage. Just around the corner from all the tourists

I had one strudel with cherry and one with puppy seeds. Both were very delicious. Nice small place - highly recommended.

Our tour guide mentioned this place so we stopped in for a coffee and pastry. I am so glad we stopped. I had this vanilla cream cake that was basically some puff pastry filled with about 3 inches of vanilla cream. It was the best thing I ate that day. Just thinking about it makes my mouth water. If you are in the area definitely hunt this place down and take a seat on the sidewalk for some delicious pastry and people watching.

Take the address with you to Buda. It is in a little alley with beautiful stone arches. The young lady on duty was very unfriendly, but the strudel was better than my Grandmother made, better than the Hilton's, and better than all the other restaurants where we ate in Hungary!! It is point 1 mile from the Hilton. Over 3 days we tried apple, cheese, poppy seed, and my favorite--sour cherry.

This small bakery has delicious strudels... freshly Made ...
recommended to visit !
The strudel with cherry is the best :)
Guy1975
Pizza slice and apple strudel for under €3, taken away and eaten while sitting on a bench at Fisherman's Bastion. Great dinner and lots of people watching :)

The best Strudel in Budapest. Hidden in the passage it is worth the visit after the museum and the palace.

Amazing strudel. We had sour cherry and poppy seeds with sour cherry. Both were excellent. If you head away from Fisherman's Bastion towards hospital in the rock there's a tree lined avenue with plenty of shady benches and a good view, too. Great place to enjoy the strudels.

I had dessert and beer in this little treasure at the heart of Budapest. The beer was good the cherry strudel just delicious.

Right across Matthias church, it would be a shame not to taste real Hungarian strudel when you're there plus for very little money. It can easily be missed although it's close, since it's tucked away in an alleyway. There is a sign on the mini square pointing to it.
